Delivering the Highest Level of Humane Animal Care

Iowa State’s Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) team plays a crucial role in upholding the university’s critical academic and research missions by supporting the highest levels of humane animal care. LAR staffers who are specially trained and certified for laboratory animal medicine and care:

  • Provide superior veterinary oversight, husbandry, social housing, and environmental enrichment expertise;
  • Facilitate campus research and instructional programs through collaboration, consultation, training, and provision of professional technical and clinical services;
  • Reduce experimental variables due to stress and disease; and
  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal and state regulations.

LAR is managed and operated in compliance with the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Welfare Act Regulations. The Iowa State Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Human Sciences are accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC). All LAR policies and procedures adhere to the recommendations of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching.
